Friday Fact: Recycled Bedding Solids

All farms need bedding for cows - some use sand, others use kiln dried sawdust, and recycled bedding solids.

At Daona Fram, we use recycled bedding solids. We have a bedding recovery unit, which takes our — always abundant — cow manure and separates the liquid from the solid portion. The liquids return to the manure pit and get stored until it can applied to the fields for fertilizer. The solids are then heated up to 150°, which kills bacteria and dries the product into a fluffy, comfortable bedding source.

This process allows us to bed the whole dairy herd with a renewable resource!
